Charlie Allen Cambridge ContractorWhen I came to Cambridge from Washington State in the 1960s to attend Harvard, I was struck by the architectural richness and diversity of the city’s streetscapes. Raised by a do-it-yourselfer, I wasn’t afraid to pick up a hammer and soon found myself working nights and weekends as a contractor, renovating and restoring period homes in the neighborhood. In 1978 I founded Charlie Allen Renovations.

For more than three decades, my team and I have restored and renovated scores of period homes large and small in the Greater Boston area, from modest one or two room projects to full house remodeling. We know how your house was built, and with decades of experience, exactly how to remodel it to fit your modern-day lifestyle without losing any well-earned charm.  Please take a minute to review examples of our work HERE.

Julie PalmerSince joining Charlie Allen Renovations in 1999, I've worked with Charlie and our team to make the hard work of taking a home renovation from 'before' to 'after' much less painful. The professional process that we have developed combines comprehensive pre-construction planning and creative project management. Collaborating with you well before we start the remodeling work, we're able to determine concrete project goals that coincide with your budget.

“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.”

I just wanted to take a few minutes to say "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!". I know that you have moved on to new projects and customers, but my mind wanders daily to a year ago when you were in the midst of transforming my apartment. (well, washing dishes in the tub is entirely over-rated) but, seriously, I have to tell you, I am so grateful. I think of each of you every day and say thank you in my heart for your part in the transformation of my home. You are the best!

Julie Palmer named National Association of Home Builders' Remodeler of the Month

“Without a doubt, the only way and the best way to run a company is to support each other in all aspects of our life,” said Julie Palmer, president of Charlie Allen Renovations in Cambridge. “It’s not just about the job; it’s about your family and your life outside of work as well.”

“Trust is really the key to the whole thing when you’re working in this way,” Jim Miller says. The Millers had worked with Charlie Allen before and held them in high regard, but the project was still in some ways a leap of faith….But when the Millers describe their first look at their home after returning from Florida, it sounds like the dramatic ending of an HGTV reality show. “We were blown away,” Deb Miller says of the moment they stepped foot in their remodeled home. “We had seen it in pictures but . . . it’s hard to put it all together, the whole space, in the picture. So we were really thrilled with it when we got back and saw it.”

“I was a good student activist at Harvard, but then I had to make a living.  I had an on-again, off-again thing with remodeling through the '70s.  And in about 1978, I said this is good, this is what I'll do, and that's what I've done.  Trying to answer those seemingly competing interests—“I love my old house and want to retain it's authenticity or its charm or its style, but I need to change it”—that still gets me up in the morning....It's really heart-and-soul stuff for me.”

“When your contractor is frequently compared to Honest Abe, you know you’re working with someone special. A Harvard grad with a Lincolnesque beard, Charlie Allen has pursued the art of historic restoration and renovation since 1978. Over the decades, he’s amassed a veritable trophy case of preservation awards while recruiting an equally talented staff...”
