RESTORATIONS: EXTERIOR

Cambridge exterior restorationCAMBRIDGE MANSARD
The exterior of this 1875 Mansard was completely renovated, transforming it back into a beautiful home that gracefully illuminates the historic qualities of the neighborhood.

The renovation eliminated vinyl siding from the entire house.  In its place, red cedar clapboards were installed on all wall surfaces.  New frieze was introduced over doors and windows, and corner boards were either restored or replaced.  New wood gutters with corrugated copper downspouts replaced existing aluminum gutters, and the original flat panel detail beneath the windows was revealed and restored.  A SlateLine shingle roof was installed (with the original slate maintained on the main roof.)  An existing chain link fence was removed, and the home’s front steps and entry were completely recreated.  Finally, the entire home was painted in colors determined to be historically appropriate by the Cambridge Historical Society.

Ocieanfront exterior restorationOCEAN FRONT HOME
Aluminum siding had completely covered the exterior of this home, located across the street from the Atlantic Ocean, leaving its many period architectural details hidden from view.  Charlie Allen Renovations removed the siding and rotten clapboards beneath, wrapped the house to protect it from moisture, and then re-sided with pre-painted clapboards and shingles.  Because of its proximity to the ocean, window efficiency was important, and thirty windows were replaced or restored, including original curved double windows on the front bay.

Three kinds of siding were used during the restoration: western red cedar clapboards on the first floor, white cedar shingles on the second, including dormers, and white cedar fish scale shingles for the front gables. Removal of the aluminum siding uncovered many original trim details that were replicated, including columns that closely match the existing half-column on the front porch against the house, as well as frieze, fascia, and molding elements.  A new copper bonnet roof and curved copper gutter on the front porch offers additional distinction.

TESTIMONIALS

“When we set out to find a contractor to work on our historic home, we spent a lot of time finding just the right company that would take the time to understand how we work and work well with us. Relationship building is important to us, and we wanted to find someone we could work with for years to come. We chose Charlie Allen Renovations for a number of reasons: the quality of their craftsmanship, their attention to detail, their flexibility, and their genuine, passionate interest in historic renovation. Above all, we chose Charlie Allen Renovations because the company, from the start, was honest and realistic about the project's timeframe and budget. We knew that we could trust a company like that.”
