HOME RESTORED BY CHARLIE ALLEN RENOVATIONS
WINS 2017 DIRECTORS AWARD FROM SOMERVILLE HISTORIC
PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Award is the 9th for the Cambridge-based firm
CAMBRIDGE, MA [May 26, 2017] – An 1894 Victorian house in Somerville, badly damaged by fire in December 2014 and then painstakingly restored and renovated by Cambridge-based Charlie Allen Renovations (CAR), has won a Director’s Award from the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission. It is the 9th project by Charlie Allen Renovations to be recognized by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission, and its third to receive the SHPC Director’s Award.
Per the commission, the award recognizes “owners of non-historically designated properties who have helped preserve or restore the distinctive architectural features of an older building in Somerville.” Located at 83 Belmont Street, Somerville, the iconic residence was designed by teenage prodigy Thomas Marriott James for his parents. James would go on to design many notable local buildings, including the Shubert Theatre in Boston. The award was presented to homeowners Laura de la Torre Bueno and Hayyim Feldman on May 25, 2017.
“We fondly remember all of the homes that we work on but this one, which was a labor of love early in our company history, was particularly special, ”says CAR President Julie Palmer, “We were shocked to learn of the fire, but honored and invigorated by the opportunity to return this majestic house to its glory.”
The process of restoring the home was comprehensive and meticulous. Every piece of moulding in the house was carefully removed, catalogued, thoroughly cleaned, restored, and replaced. All of the home’s windows had been damaged and needed to be replaced. Stained glass, stair railings, fireplace mantels, decorative tile, and other original features were all removed and restored or replaced with perfectly matching materials.
Charlie Allen headed the project with CAR project manager Nortoh Alexander. Project partners included Jackson Schillaci Woodworking, master finisher Wayne Towle, Jim Anderson Stained Glass, and Belfor.
We’re so happy to have our home back,” says Laura de la Torre Bueno. “The team at Charlie Allen Renovations and all of the other craftspeople did an extraordinary job. Our house has been perfectly restored and we’re thrilled that the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission has recognized everyone’s hard work and talent.”
